Janet Can Ride!

You were probably thinking that the super bowl situation
was the end for Janet?
That she’d never bounce back.
That she just didn’t have it anymore?
That she should throw in the towel….do something else?
Well Janet was thinking that you thought that too.
So when she took center stage at the Staple Center last night
42, and real thick in a full sequined body suit
and started wopping to the ‘Pleasure Principle’ like it was 1986,
it was just for you.
She came to beat your ass...
to remind you of why you loved her in the first place.
It was clear, at least to me, that this was not a game!

I can talk about the dancers,
the elaborate sets, and the pyrotechnics.
But I wasn't paying attention to that.
My focus was just...Janet.

She started from the beginning.
So the set list was crazy!
She did PleasurePrinciple Control WhatHaveYouDoneForMeLately
Feedback YouWantThis Alright MissYouMuch RhythmNation
NeverLetchuGo ComeBackToMe Let’sWaitAwhile Again
SoExcited SoMuchBetta Nasty AllNite(Don’t Stop)
RockWithU Together Again Doesn’tReallyMatter
Escapade LoveWillNeverDo(Without You) WhenIThinkOfYou AllForYou
GotTilIt’sGone CallOnMe That’sTheWayLoveGoes IGetLonely FunnyHowTimeFlies
AnyTime,AnyPlace Discipline BlackCat If RhythmNation Luv and Runaway Whew!
And somewhere inbetween all of THAT... she did it.
She served us 1982!
She gave her ride or die fans
‘Young Love’, ‘Say You Do’, and ‘Don’t Stand Another Chance’…
I lost my mind!
If she had performed ‘Dream Street’
I would’ve died… right there … on the floor in row 6.
True to form, Janet did a full on S&M scene
with a very lucky dude from the crowd.
She gives him the time of his life
if only for 4 minutes.
And last night was no different.
Janet clad in high heeled boots
and a whip got on top of homeboy
And rode him, like a pony, with no hands.
Jermaine Dupri is GETTING it!
Yes, Janet is one of us.

Janet proves time and time again
that she’s earned her spot here.
She’s diligent and fly.
But you knew that already.

thoughtsandthings...9/7-9/15 nineleven

There are those moments in life that you never ever forget.
Those moments that change you.
That change how you view the world forever.
When Martin Luther King was killed, Brother Malcolm, Kennedy…
What you were doing the morning of September 11, 2001.

I was at home in bed in my tiny one bedroom apartment in Los Angeles.
It was a little before 6 am when my husband attempted to tell me that
a plane had hit The World Trade Center.
Still half asleep, and thinking it was a small 4 seater plane,
I mumbled something about how sad that was.
A few moments later he yelled that another plane
had hit the other building
and that I should get up now.
Still reeling from the death of Aaliyah,
I scrambled out of bed thinking that this cannot be happening.
In the hours that followed the world as I knew it fell apart.
News of the Pentagon and Flight 91 were emerging.
The phone began ringing.
Rumors were flying.
Then the towers came down.
It was complete mayhem.
I couldn’t stop crying.
I grew up in Newark, New Jersey.
I spent a lot of time In New York City.
This was personal to me.

It’s been 7 years since the attacks on America.
And the images still haunt me.
Over time I’ve collected many magazine and newspaper articles
that captured those horrific moments.
I think about the victims and their families often.
Christmas of 2001, I flew back to New York
I read the stories posted in the subway
of people looking for their loved ones.
One guy was looking for his best friend of 25 years
that had taught him how to tie his shoes.
Riveting!
Every year I visit the official 9/11 website
and I learn about different victims,
their stories, their families.
It’s my very small way of keeping them alive
Of remembering.
I don’t want to forget.
I.will.never.forget.

thoughtsandthings...8/25-9/1 yes we can!

This was the week of the Democratic Convention. And it was Magnificent. Historic.
Just like the election itself.
75,000 people watched Obama deliver his speech in person. And an estimated 35 million watched at home.
Here's a smart, engaging, and beautiful brown brother inspiring us to believe again, to take control of our government, to
be our brothers/sisters keepers.
I'm not voting on Obama because he's black, I'd vote on anyone that was offering what he's bringing to the plate.
There’s lots to say about the upcoming election,
But I love the Obamas, you see.
When I look at Michelle Obama, I see a woman with
substance that's on top of her game.
She's Smart. Dignified. Classy.
She stands 5’11 and wears it…well.
When I look at this family, I see unity, pride.
And everything that I've always known black love to be.
These people love each other and you can smell it.
They want more for us and I believe them.
My hope is alive.
It must be awesome for Malia and Sasha to watch
their daddy inspire a nation.
I'm happy that my 5 year old son isn't at all phased by this historic event.
And yes, I will teach him the significance of this election.
But I'm tickled that in his eyes it's normal for a brown man to be running for President.
To him it's the natural process, the way it's supposed to be.
That’s beautiful.
And that’s the point isn’t it?
Yes we can!
Yes we can!
